GRIFFITH RULES COACH APPOINTED

At a general meeting of the Griffith Australian Rules Football Club held last Thursday evening, applications for the position of playing coach to the Club for the 1955 season were considered and after a lengthy discussion, Wally Price of the West Perth Club was selected.
Price was very highly recommended for the position by several acknowledged authorities and the Griffith Club feel that they have secured a very worthy successor to Tom Roulent.
Representing Western Australia in four interstate carnivals and generally acclaimed one of that State's best and most consistent players over the last decade. Price is 28 years old, 5ft. 8ins and 11 half stone and has played mainly in the backline or centre.
In September 1953 "Sporting Life" a popular Australian sporting monthly contained a lengthy and most laudatory article on Wally Price which, besides emphasising his ability as a player, very highly praised his worth as a clubman, and it would appear in these of intensive competition for worthwhile coaches, the Griffith Club has again cracked the jackpot.
Price and his family are expected to arrive in Griffith early in March and the club members are eagerly awaiting his arrival.

GRIFFITH AUST. RULES GENERAL MEETING

There was a large attendance at the annual general meeting of the Griffith Australian Rules Football Club, held in the C.W.A. Hall on Friday night last.
The president Mr. Len Polkinghorne said he was very gratified to see such a good roll-up and was particularly pleased to see so many new faces present.
In presenting his annual report, Mr. Polkinghorne stated that although the team had not qualified for the finals, they had experienced a good year and with a little more luck this season could possibly go much further.
In offering congratulations to the 1954 Premiers Ariah Park-Mirrool United, Mr. Polkinghorne said that their success showed what could accomplished by good teamwork and good physical fitness.
The past season had been a successful one financially and the Club's credit balance had increased some £200.
However, most of this had gone into the House Account and the Club would not commence the new season with a very substantial cash balance.
Mr. Polkinghorne thanked the very willing supporters who had helped out in any of the functions or efforts throughout the year. The Club owed each and every one a very sincere vote of thanks. The Ladies Auxiliary had again been a tower of strength to the Club. Their untiring and unselfish efforts were very deeply appreciated, and it was very pleasing to see the way that the players assisted these hard-working ladies throughout the season.
Continuing, Mr. Polkinghorne said that the new coach would be arriving shortly, and he appealed to everyone to try and make him feel at home. From many reports it seemed as if the Griffith Club had secured one of the best men available. Many other Clubs had been interested in Wally Price even some of the leading Melbourne ones. Given time to settle down he felt sure that their new coach would live up to his very high recommendations.
In conclusion, Mr. Polkinghorne thanked the executive committee and all the other helpers for co-operation and loyal support during the past season. He wished all the codes of sports within the district a happy and successful year and finally appealed to all followers of Australian Rules to give the officials of the Griffith Club for this season their fullest support.
The Hon. Treasurer Mr. W. Simmons then presented his usual detailed statement of accounts for the past season. His figures showed that some £2,100 had been handled during the year. The general account revealed a credit balance of £156/12/1, while the overall balance of the Club, including house and other assets, provided a very handsome balance credit of £820/7/2.
Mr. E. A. Wood, a Life Member of the Club, and a former treasurer for many years, said that the figures presented by the Treasurer were most enlightening and it was very pleasing to see the Club on such a sound financial footing.
Mr. M. Holden supported the remarks of Mr. Wood, adding that the Club was particularly fortunate in having such a thorough and meticulous man as Bill Simmons for the Treasurer.
Officers
President: Mr. Len Polkinghorne; Vice-Presidents: Messrs. Mac Holden and Roy Riley
Hon. Treasurer: Mr. Bill Simmons; Joint Hon. Secretary: Neil Griggs and Betty Hurley
Committee: Messrs., Ern Myott, Hugh McLean, Harry Pollard, Frank Ford, J. I. Ryan, George Kite and Vic Carroll
It was decided to again affiliate with the S.W.D.F.L. and membership tickets were fixed at 15/-, ladies 10/-.
There was considerable discussion on the sponsoring of reserve grade, junior and schoolboy football in the coming season, but finally the matter was left until after the annual meeting of the S.W.D.F.L.
The President, Mr. Polkinghorne in closing the meeting, thanked all for their attendance remarking that the interest and enthusiasm shown that night presaged a very successful season for the Griffith Club.   (Riverina Advocate - Thursday February 24, 1955)

AUST. RULES NOTES
(By "HIGH MARK")

For an example of enthusiasm and love of our great game, you can't go past Ernie Myott, selector of this and many seasons past.
A player and umpire of noted ability with the Sydney Club in his younger days, Ern has always maintained his interest in the administrative department of the game and can generally relied on to settle any argument concerning happenings in past games of the Griffith team, his little book of reference being as well known as he is himself.
Would you like to have a look at that book one day Ern, might get some interesting pars for this column.

FOOTBALL BARRACKING

Sir, please allow me some space in your paper to voice my opinion on the disgusting barracking I witnessed at Griffith on 20th June, at the Showground, in the S.W.D.F.L. between Griffith and Ganmain.
I witnessed a good few Australian Rules games in this area and as yet have not seen anything as ridiculously one-eyed as the barracking witnessed on Sunday.
I only hope, for the good of the game, and after all it is only sport, that I do not witness another exhibition of barracking as I did yesterday.
I only hope also that I was unluckily enough to strike the minority of the Griffith supporters.
It was disgusting to hear such phrases as "bury him in the dirt" and any person would realise that once any team goes on the field with the idea of playing dirty football that they forfeit all chances of winning.
Griffith has always been highly respected as a sporting town, so why not keep up the good name supporters, instead of showing your feelings when losing.
As previously stated, I can only hope the barracking I heard was in the minority.
Thanking you for allowing me space.

Yours in Sport, "Ardent Rules Fan"
(Riverina Advocate - Thursday June 30, 1955)
