SWANS AIMING FOR FIFTH WIN IN DAMIEN SCOTT'S 150TH - By Rebecca Kroek

THE Griffith Swans first grade side should post their fifth win of its season this Sunday, when it plays Temora at the Exies Oval. Temora has struggled all season to post just one victory from 11 games, defeating MCUE in round four by 57-points. Since then, there has been a string of losses, and the club has not been helped by a coaching change three weeks ago, with captain-coach Craig McGough leaving and assistant coach Kane Johnstone stepping up.
Senior Griffith Swans player Damien Scott, who takes the field for his 150th game in the red and white on Sunday, said that while the Swans should beat Temora, the game cannot be taken lightly. The sides last met in round three at Temora, Griffith posting its first win of the season with a 205 to 120 result. Since that game, Griffith has won three and lost five, although several losses have been by small margins.
Last weekend the Swans trailed by 32 at half time against EWK, but after a second half comeback went down by only five points. "This week, we're gradually improving and hopefully we can improve on the weekend and rack up a good score," Scott said. "All along captain-coach Jon O'Dwyer has kept us fairly positive as far as we go out and give it our utmost. "A couple of these game could've easily gone our way and they haven't and that's what's put us in the position we are now."
Scott is one of the more experienced players in the side, and with plenty of youngsters in the team finds that they tend to look up to the seniors. "Guys like Phil Rowston, Jon O'Dwyer, Chris Conlan and Jamie Bennett, there's a few of us around that 30-age bracket, and obviously a lot of the younger guys do look up to us and we try and support them as much as we can," Scott said.
Involved in the club on more levels than just as a player, in 1999 Scott was awarded the Joan Hicks Memorial Award Clubperson of the Year with his wife Leanne. "You're there all the time, it becomes part of your daily habit and it you don't enjoy it most people walk away. I enjoy it that's why I keep doing it," he said.
"Guys like Ian Wade are putting a lot of time and heart into the club, I'm just along for the ride. " I just enjoy being around the club and the young guys keep you young, I guess. "While ever I'm enjoying the game, I think I'll stick around with it, you're a long time retired." (Edited - The Area News - Friday, July 13, 2001).

Match report: Kicking 36 goals to five, the Griffith Swans posted their biggest win of the season to thrash Temora 234 to 33 at the Exies Oval. Up front, Danny Beriman's kicking saw him boot an accurate seven goals one for the game and Dave Curran six as the Swans returned to the winners list with a 201-point victory.

Griffith captain-coach Jon 'ODwyer was happy not only with the scoreline, but with how his players performed. "We just went out to play the footy we're capable of and the scoreboard takes care of itself," O'Dwyer said after the game.  He said the "fantastic start" set up the win, the Swans holding Temora scoreless while kicking nine goals seven in the opening term.

"That's the footy we've got to play if we're going to get anyway near being a finals side," O'Dwyer said.

He also said he was very happy with how Jason Malone played in marking key Kangaroo player Archie Harvey, while he said Rod Duncan led by example all game to put in another strong effort.  Pleased with the win as the finals draw near, O'Dwyer was also happy that the Swans kept Temora to five goals while kicking 36 themselves. "It shows was we're capable of if we play four quarters of consistent footy," O'Dwyer added.
The Swans reserve grade side posted a massive victory, dominating Temora for the entire match to finish 263 to 6 winners. The Kangaroos kicked one goal in the second term but were held scoreless for the remaining three quarters as the Swans proved far too strong.  A 11-goal lead at the first term was increased to 132 by the long break, and the Swans then added six in the third quarter. However, the final quarter was the biggest scoring, Griffith booting 13 goals five for the term to finish 257-point victors. (By Rebecca Kroek - The Area News - Monday, July 16, 2001).

Match report: A big third quarter saw the Griffith Swans continue its quest for a top five finish with a 109 to 84 victory over Turvey Park at Maher Oval. After a tight first half, the Swans kicked four goals four while holding the Bulldogs to just one major in the third term and pull away to what become a match-winning lead.
It was a must win game for the Swans if they were to keep their finals hopes alive, trailing sixth-placed Turvey Park by four points. The win should see the Swans move into sixth with a better for and against percentage than he Bulldogs. With fifth-placed Leeton-Whitton going down to East Wagga-Kooringal, Griffith is now just one win out of the top five with five rounds to go.
The game opened with neither side able to gain the upper hand and at the first break Turvey Park held a narrow two-point lead. The second quarter saw the sides again kick an equal number of goals, but the Bulldogs added an extra two behinds to be four up at the long break.
The Swans, however, came out firing in the third term and while holding Turvey Park to one goal two kicked four majors and two behinds to hold a valuable lead into the final quarter. While the home side found some lift in the final term to kick four goals, Griffith had the momentum and booted a further five majors to seal the win.

SWANS LOOK TO KEEP THE EAGLES GROUNDED - By Rebecca Kroek

THE Griffith Swans side will be looking for a big win over Narrandera this weekend to boost its percentage as the finals draw closer. The Eagles have just two wins from 13 games and the Swans should post a comfortable victory although at this stage of time no game can be taken lightly.
"We've got to win as many games as we can to get into the finals, but you never go into a game expecting to win," said Swans assistant coach Phillip Rowston, who plays his 100th senior game with the club on Sunday.
With just five rounds remaining in the regular season the Swans are a very good chance to make the finals, sitting in sixth just one win behind Leeton-Whitton. Turvey Park trails Griffith but only on percentage, and with the three sides placed so closely together and so for and against statistics could be vital in determining who goes through and who misses out. "I'm quite confident we will make the finals," Rowston said.

"Our destiny is in our hands. "I think we will get there on our own merits, we don't need to hang around waiting for the other people's results." The sides last met in round five at Narrandera with Griffith pulling away from a slow start to post a 67-point win.  Since then, Narrandera has continued to struggle, and last weekend suffered a 189-point loss to the Wagga Tigers.

Griffith, meanwhile, came out firing in the third quarter to post a 25-point win over Turvey and established themselves as genuine, finals contenders. "We've always thought that we were good enough to be in the finals, we just made it harder on ourselves by not winning some of the early games," Rowston said.
The Swans last made the finals in 1998 under the coaching of Rowston, but were eliminated by Narrandera.  This year the Eagles are nowhere near a top five finish, while the Swans are looking to start their run at the finals with a solid win at Exies Oval on Sunday afternoon. (The Area News - Friday, July 27, 2001).

Match report: The Griffith Swans kept their RFL finals hopes alive with a 121 to 72 win over Narrandera at the Exies Oval. With four rounds to go the Swans remain level with Turvey Park, although Leeton-Whittton's victory over Temora leaves Griffith still one win outside the five. Despite sitting well down the ladder with just two wins this season Narrandera challenged the Swans early and at quarter time trailed by seven points. Griffith managed to extend this in the second term although hampered by inaccuracy, kicking two goals eight for the quarter for a 20-point lead at half time.
Things improved in the third term for both sides the Eagles managed three goals although the Swans stayed ahead and lifted in accuracy to kick five goals four.
The home side closed out the game solidly in the final quarter, putting in its best effort of the day to add another six goals and keep victory well out of Narrandera's reach.
The Swans reserve grade side, meanwhile, continued to improve its for and against percentage with a 226 to 2 thrashing of Narrandera. After opening with a nine-goal first term, the Swans cruised along to finish with 15 majors in the final quarter. Paul Rogerson booted eight goals, with Andrew Trotter bagging seven, Jason Magoci five and Shayne Driscoll and Adam Beriman, four each in a big win.
The Under 18s Swans, however, went down to Narrandera 54 to 81 in a hard-fought game, after trailing by just three points at three quarter time.  (The Area News - Monday, July 30, 2001).

Match report: A RAMPANT 12-goal last quarter helped set up a 136-point win for the Wagga Tigers over the Griffith Swans, the home side posting a 197 to 61 victory. The loss sees the Swans finals hopes drop, with next weekend's game against Coolamon now a must win one.

Wagga has now won 14 games straight, its only loss this season a narrow one in the first round to East Wagga-Kooringal, and sees the Tigers remain firm premiership favourites.
This match started fairly evenly, Wagga and Griffith kicking a goal each early and both seeing plenty of the ball. However, the Tigers kicked four goals in less than 10 minutes to take the lead, and although the Swans pulled it back to an 18-point gap at quarter time the home side was looking strong. Taking control of the game in the second term, Wagga kicked 10 majors to Griffith's one and aided by inaccuracy from the visitors with five behinds, took a 70-point lead into the long break.
The Swans continued to struggle to score past the solid Tigers defence and by three quarter time the gap was 112 points. Although Griffith improved in the final term to kick four majors, Wagga continued to outscore the visitors with twelve more goals to take a convincing win.  (The Area News - Monday August 6, 2001).

Match report: The Griffith Swans hopes of taking a spot in this year's Riverina Football League finals disappeared on Sunday, the side going down by nine points in a hard-fought encounter with Coolamon at Exies Oval. Heading into the game Griffith trailed fifth placed Leeton-Whitton by eight points, but with the Swans going down and the Crows big winners over Narrandera a finals berth was put beyond reach.
Though missing out on the finals, the Swans side did improve on the first-round result against third placed Coolamon pushing all the way. With three minutes of the match remaining a goal to Danny Beriman brought the Swans within three points of the lead but Coolamon came up with a reply, when James McKenzie soccered the ball off the ground and through for a goal to give his side a nine-point lead, Coolamon keeping the margin intact for the remaining minutes to take the points.
"She's been a season of near misses," said the Swans coach Jon O'Dwyer after the match, but he was still happy with the way his side performed. "When you look back at it, we have improved heaps from last year which is great, and we have pushed all the sides in the top five."

O'Dwyer's goal now is for his team to finish off the season well and win its two remaining games against Mangoplah and the side which beat the Swans into fifth place Leeton-Whitton. "We were always up against it with percentage, but hopefully we can put a chink in their (Leeton's) armour before the finals," he said. "We are definitely going to try and finish off the season on a good note, and hopefully our supporters will get behind us and see the improvement, we are not far off it."  GRIFFITH'S HOME GAME SWAN-SONG - By Rebecca Kroek

THE Griffith Swans play their last home game for 2001 tomorrow, when they host Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlake at the Exies Oval. With two rounds remaining before the finals, the Swans will not make the top five this year, but captain-coach Jon O'Dwyer is already looking ahead to 2002. "It is a little bit disappointing to come so close, but we have made an improvement this year," O'Dwyer said.
He said probably the most disappointing thing is probably that there were so many games where Griffith came close to a win but not close enough. "If everyone gave that extra two per cent those close games would've gone in our favour and we would have been sitting in second spot, that's the lesson we've got to learn from that," O'Dwyer said. However, now he is looking at the final two rounds as the start of preparing for next year.

"What we're going to concentrate on is say these are our first two pre-season games for next year," O'Dwyer said. "We're going to make sure that we're their next time."
Meanwhile, O'Dwyer is looking for a win in the Swans' last home game. Griffith defeated MCUE by 40 points at Mangoplah earlier this season, however O'Dwyer is not expecting an easy game tomorrow. "It was a pretty scratchy affair last time, but I think they'll be out to finish off on a good note too," he said.

However, he added that a win tomorrow would repay the supporters who have followed the Swans this year, as well as rounding off the season for the players. (The Area News - Friday August 17, 2001).

SWANS HELP DREYER CELEBRATE IN STYLE - By Rebecca Kroek

A 14-GOAL first half set the Griffith Swans up to finish its season at home with a convincing 149 to 27 win over Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes on Saturday. With Greg Dreyer playing his 200th senior game for the club, the Swans came out firing and held MCUE to just four goals for the game. Dreyer said it was very satisfying to take such a good win in the windy cold conditions. "The first half was good then it got a bit scrappy; they dragged it down a bit," Dreyer said. "Overall, I think it was a great team effort and a good win."
He nominated Rodney Duncan, Phillip Rowston and David Curran as among those to stand out for the Swans.

Dreyer played his first senior game for the Swans in 1987, and on Saturday celebrated his 200th senior game having played nearly 300 games for Swans. He joined 10 other players in the club's history to have reached that milestone, and said it was great to celebrate it with a win.
