AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST AWAY MEETINGS WITH COOLAMON ROVERS - 03.08.24

In 84 matches played between the clubs at Kindra Park, that stretch back to 1939, Coolamon Rovers hold the upper hand with 42 wins to Griffith's 40. The first meeting was on June 18, 1939, in the South Western District Football League, which was won by the visitors 48 to 42. The game saw the debut of Collingwood 18-year-old seconds player Len Hustler, as Griffith's playing coach. It was reported that Hustler's job is to weld a group of individualists into a co-ordinate team which should be equal to the best that the South West has seen. Sunday's match provided fast, open and exciting football and was easily the best match that Griffith has played this year, evenly contested against a high-class Coolamon team.
Coolamon Rovers: - Errol Barker, Eddie Mangelsdolf, Merv Hurst, Dudley Barker, Alf Black, Tom Maloney, Gill Day, Neil Griggs, Jack Green, Merv Priest, Bernie & Ted Smith, Bert Williamson, Ted Davis, Roy Johnson, W Leary, Hector Eyles, Allan Moller.

The game on Sunday June 24, 1951, Griffith enjoyed one of their best wins of the season 85 to 28, Teddy Feltwell helping himself to six goals. Captain-coach Ken Hansen had the misfortune of fracturing his hand keeping him out for the rest of the season. "Stabpass" in his weekly notes, wrote that members of the Griffith eighteen at Coolamon on Sunday were highly amused by the following incident. A Griffith official included a bottle of wine in his kit to give the team a small "nip" for the final term and left his bag open under a tree while the match was in progress. In returning to pick up his bag, he found an empty bottle and five shillings in silver alongside. Two well-known Coolamon identities enjoyed the remainder of the game apparently well-fortified against the cold wintry conditions.
