GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" May 16, 1992 - No. 5

Five minutes on and 15 minutes off was the setting against Coolamon last week and we were lucky to come away with a draw. Coach Matthew McGuirk hit it on the head after the match when he said that players not turning up for training was one of the problems. Hopefully, this week we got a full complement during the week in preparation for the match today against EWK. Paul Young was one of the better movers on the ground, but his partner on the half back line Owen Brown who never stops trying took out the encouragement award sponsored by Martin and Webb. Others to get the money were David Gee, Colin Cassidy and Jamie Bennett.

Congratulations to Chris Conlan who was named among the best in the NSW side which went down to Queensland as the lead-up match to the State of Origin.

Tony DiPastena and Domonic Spataro made their presence felt in the Reserve Grade match against Coolamon. Both players are new to the club from down Victoria way and Tony showed he will be an asset with six goals in a best on ground display, while Domonic did well on the backline. Welcome to the club boys and we hope you stay in Griffith is a good one.

Reserve graders came back from 3 goals down at the last chance to win by 26 points in a good effort. Dom Testoni continued on from last week, as did fullback Ian Cohen, Matthew Mamouney and Wayne Tyndall.

With a week’s training under the belt, the U18 side came up with the goods and had a win over Coolamon to get on the board on the plus side of the points. Peter Vardanega was the standout player and won the Pizza from the Casablanca, while Brent Hathaway, Malcolm Burke and Paul Rovere also played well.

Sorry to say in the hassle and bustle of the after-game activities I forgot to get the netball information, but I do know that both sides had their first win of the season which will set them up two good matches against EWK today.

A reminder to all players and supporters about the Peter Blackman Benefit, where Michael Whitney will be the guest speaker at the Ex-Servicemens Club on May 30. Peter needs the assistance so anyone who can make it, tickets are available at the sponsor’s front desk.
