GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" July 29, 1990 - No. 15

A Trifecta!!! Good darts! The Netballers only missed by two goals in making it a clean sweep, but they are in there battling against great odds - on and off the field!! Best players were Karen Donetto, Jenny Jeffrey and Bernadette Cox. Like the continuing story of Peyton Place - so the saga of the controversial draw against Coolamon continues!! It didn't get played last Saturday - it will now be played today at Ganmain - so the girls will have two games today! Good luck in both!

The Firsts showed a lot of the so-called pundits that they can still win even if Les (Parish) is not on the field - hopefully he'll be back this week but if not then we can do it again - we'd rather have him fit for September. It was a hard slog and there were some memorable clashes - particularly between Mick Murphy and Brenton Vilcins. Again, the backline stood firm ably led by Ian Geddes. The winners of the S.L.P.I. Award donated by John Kupsch went to Gerry Toscan, Joey Agresta, Andrew Romagnolo and Mark O'Connor but others to impress were Peter King and Jamie Bennett.

The Seconds had big win but the game itself never reached any great heights. Bob Berton made yet another come-back and David Alpen showed shades of he's past ability picking up the mug and 'Bruno' Ceccato the financial remuneration. Nice to see 'Hoot' McGrath is slowly getting back amongst the action. 'Snow' Taylor does a good job as runner at the moment, but it is hoped that it won't be too long before he gets back on the paddock.

The Under 18's game never looked like being close after the first quarter. Leeton led at the first change but after that their wheels fell off. We had so many on the bench last week we didn't have enough jumpers! It was like watching a chess game with T.B. pulling the players on and off all the time, but they all had a run and it's nice to see them all sticking together off the field as well. Considering that until last Sunday there were only 3 teams to consider for the U18s flag - it would appear that now there are only two. Our boys are still being robbed one game. No-one seems to be able to find the game against Narrandera which was played as a curtain-raiser to the Inter-League game. They are on 40 points - clear leaders! No doubt something will be done before the end of the season. Best players were Gavin Owen, Mark Owen, Robert Kelly, Christian Files and Travis Payne.
