Semi final - Saturday September 1, 1912 at Narandera Park Oval
Ganmain ..... 2.2 .. 3.2 .. 3.4 .. 4.5 (29)
Leeton ... 0.2 .. 2.9 .. 2.11 .. 3.11 (29)
Match report: Ganmain, with a few supporters, journeyed to Narandera by mail train, whilst Leeton travelled up on the footballers' special, and were accompanied by a large following. Both clubs were strongly represented, and each was equally confident of victory. The day was fine and the playing ground in good order, and there was a fair crowd to witness the game.
Ab Graham, Ganmain's skipper won the toss from H Parker, and kicked towards the southern goal. The game was hard fought and interesting one from the start, and when the teams meet again the game should be one of the best of the series. For Ganmain those who shone out best were J Breen, J Ritchie, H Cook, L Farrands, C Bendle, A Woods, W Wade, W Lenon, and B Watkins, although the whole team did their best to advert defeat. On the Leeton side H Parker, H Culph, R Alexander, W McLennan, W Elrington, H Dyson, R Bowden, and one or two others where about the most prominent of an even side. Mr. W Watt as central umpire carried out his duties in a satisfactory manner.
Semi final - Saturday September 1, 1912 at Ganmain Recreation ground
Matong ....... 1.4 .. 2.8 .. 6.8 .. 8.8 (56)
Narandera ... 0.1 .. 0.3 .. 0.3 .. 0.4 (4)
Match report: These teams met on the Ganmain recreation ground. Several of thee Narandera men were unavailable, whilst Matong were also minus two or three good men. Although Matong scored a comfortable win the scores do not altogether indicate the nature of the play, as up until half-time the match was pretty evenly contested. The game was a friendly-contested one, and Mr. D Nolan, central umpire, had an easy task to perform.
Semi final replay - Saturday September 14, 1912 at Matong
Ganmain ... 2.2 .. 2.2 .. 3.3 .. 3.3 (21)
Leeton ...... 0.2 .. 0.5 .. 0.6 .. 2.8 (20)
Match report: The semi-final between these teams in connection with the above premiership eventuated at Matong on Saturday, before a large attendance. These clubs had previously played a tie on the Narandera ground in a semi-final match, and this necessitated the game being re-played to decide the team would meet Matong in the final.
As was anticipated another stubborn and hard-fought contest from start to finish was witnessed. The first three quarters Ganmain did practically the whole of the scoring, getting to work with a great dash from the first bounce of the ball. Leeton, however, in the last quarter put in a determined rally, and played brilliant football, but they were not quite equal to the occasion and suffered defeat by the small margin of one point.
In the first quarter Ganmain scored 2 goals and 2 behinds against 2 behinds put up by Leeton. The second quarter Leeton succeeded in putting on 3 points, whilst the maroons failed to add to their score. After the interval Ganmain again assumed command, and in this term kicked 1 goal 1 behind to nil. In the final quarter Leeton, as above stated, put in some sterling work, and had Ganmain defending for all they were worth. The wearers of the black and gold notched 2 goals 3 behinds to nil. The final scores were Ganmain 3 goals 3 behinds (21pts) to Leeton 2 goals 8 behinds (20pts). Mr. W Watt umpired in his usual excellent style.
Premiership Final - Saturday September 21, 1912 at Ganmain
Matong ..... 2.1 .. 2.1 .. 3.3 .. 4.3 (27)
Ganmain ... 0.1 .. 0.2 .. 2.4 .. 2.6 (18)
Match report: On Saturday last the meeting of the above teams, who came through the semi-finals undefeated, took place at Ganmain, when the largest crowd ever seen on the recreation ground assembled to witness the struggle between these formidable foes, and were rewarded in seeing a first-class game. The takings at the gate amounted to £25.
Both teams fought a hard game, and each seemed determined to do their upmost to win. The play on both sides was very spirited, but no ill-feeling was shown. Mr. W Rowe, of Numurkah (Vic.), who several years ago umpired under the Goulburn Valley District Association, had been specially engaged, and gave the best of satisfaction as umpire.
In the first quarter Matong secured a substantial lead, which stuck to them right throughout the game. The second quarter proved to be a strenuous one, in which the home team added a point, which was the only score made. Ganmain made a rally in the third quarter, adding 14 points, whilst the visitors helped their score by kicking 1 goal 2 behinds. In the final quarter Matong again got home with a sixer. The home side tried hard to avert defeat, but their efforts at goal kicking proved futile, as they only increased their total by added 2 points before the final gong sounded, which left Matong winners by 9 points. The final score were Matong 4.3 (27pts) to Ganmain 2.6 (18pts).
As Ganmain hold the title of minor premiers through being on top at the conclusion of the competition, according to the rules of the Association they have the right to challenge if defeated in the semi-finals or final. We understand that the grand final will be played at Matong on Saturday next.
Grand Final - Saturday October 5, 1912 at Matong
Matong ..... 0.0 .. 0.2 .. 2.5 .. 3.6 (24)
Ganmain ... 0.3 .. 1.3 .. 1.4 .. 2.4 (16)
Match report: The popularity of the Victorian League game in this part of the Riverina was again borne out on Saturday afternoon last, when, despite the lateness of the season, a large crowd assembled on the Matong ground to witness the grand final between Matong and Ganmain in connection with the Ganmain and District Association premiership.
As is usual when these teams are pitted against each other another first-class contest was witnessed, the players on both sides striving hard to gain the coveted honor for their respective clubs
Mr. W Rowe, of Numurkah, Vic., had charge of the whistle, and gave every satisfaction.
In the first quarter Ganmain did all the scoring, getting 3 behinds to nil. The visitors in the second quarter succeeded in kicking 1 goal to 2 behinds by Matong, the half-time scores being Gnmain, 1-3; Matong, 0-2.
On the resumption of play after the interval Matong put a different complexion on the game, and added 2 goals 3 behinds to their tally, whilst Ganmain could only manage to increase by a single point. The final term saw the play of a more even nature, the home team kicking 1 goal 1 behind against 1 goal put up by Ganmain. The final scores were Matong 3 goals 6 behinds (24 pts) to Ganmain 2 goals 4 behinds (16 pts).
When so many of the players on both sides shone out so conspicuously it would be invidious to particularise, but "Mick" Murphy, for Matong, was undoubtedly the bright particular "star" of the match.
Matong by their victory become premiers for the season (a honor which they also held last year), and are entitled to hold the handsome silver cup donated by Messrs., Gehrig, and Confoy, of Ganmain, till the end of the 1913 season.
The winners of the premiership have played consistently throughout the season, and no one begrudges them the honor of carrying off the premiership for the second time in succession. Ganmain, though defeated, were by no means disgraced, and have put up some sterling battles during the progress of the competition. Source - Coolamon Farmers' Review.
