A summary of match report, with thanks
Griffith signalled this may be the year they return to finals action with an 88-point victory over Turvey Park at Exies Oval on Saturday night. After a first-round bye, the Swans made up for lost time and made a statement by accounting for the Bulldogs 20.8 (128) to 6.4 (40). Like last week, Turvey Park started strongly and kicked the opening two goals of the game. They trailed by 11 points at quarter-time but showed some signs early. That was as close as it got as Griffith kicked clear. They stretched the margin to 30 points at half-time, 57 points at the final change and finished strongly with a six-goal last quarter. Turvey Park could only manage two goals after the quarter-time break.
Griffith director of coaching Adrian Pavese was relieved to see it all come together for the Swans after a lot of comings and goings over the off-season. “It was a shaky start, there were a few nerves early on but in the end the boys played pretty good.” Pavese said. “We ended up kicking 20 goals. We were pretty happy with that. It’s something we talked about during the pre-season, kicking plenty of goals and enjoying our footy so it started off well tonight.
Will Griggs and Ben King led the charge for Griffith, while Sam Daniel was another to shine. Canberra recruits Alex Birch and Jordan Iudica both impressed in their first games for the club. Birch finished with four goals from centre-half forward. Griggs also booted four, while Mick Duncan also chimed in with four. Kyle Lynch was another player to perform well in his first game at the club and he managed two goals.

Pavese was most pleased with the Swans’ discipline. “Just our control around our structures,” he said. “Even early on after Turvey kicked the first couple of goals, we showed good control around sticking to our structures. “This was the first time we have played together, it’s a new look team and the way we came together like that, even though there is still a long way to go.” The Swans had 10 individual goal scores. “It was a pretty even performance,” Pavese said. “That’s another thing we spoke about in the pre-season, so we don’t want to have to reply on one person to win us the game.” (The Area News – Monday April 25, 2016).
