SEASON REVIEW - 1946

Though the war ended in 1945, it took months for some players to get demobbed so the League's administrators decided to wait until 1946 before getting back to a normal basis. This gave clubs a whole season to sort themselves out again and, in spite of many difficulties, all SWDFL clubs survived the war period, though near neighbour Whitton decided to play in the Leeton District F.A. (Kinlock Cup), a Sunday competition.
Ben Clarke had taken over as Griffith first team captain. Only five players who had played in our 1938 premiership team were still around when normal football resumed in 1946. These included Bill Brown, Eddie Forrestal, Bob Hutchins, Fred Savage and George Wade.
New players to arrive immediately after the war included Mil, Ben and Fred Clarke, Eric Geddes, Brian Higgins, Bill Jones, Denny O'Callaghan, Bruce and Ian Stevenson, Jack and Rex Waide. These were to form the backbone of the Red and Whites side during the early post-war years.
The opening Saturday encounter was to be Ganmain at the   showground. The team was selected from as follows: - Ben Clarke (capt), Jack Bennett, Ray Brill, Bill Brown, Jim Collis, George Grieve, Eddie Forrestal, Jack Higgins, Joe Hunt, Bob Hutchins, Bill Jones, Jimmy Mack, Hugh McLean, Jack O'Brien, Denny O'Callaghan, John O'Keefe, 'Tige' Parslow, Ken Reid, Robert Stevenson (Charlie Stevenson's son), George Wade, Jack and Rex Waide, and Pat Withers. However, it wasn't a particularly good performance, and, in the end, they had to settle for a 119-point thumping.
The next six games saw them suffer six defeats at the hands of Matong, Narrandera, Grong Grong, Coolamon, Leeton and Ganmain before at last they registered their first and only victory of the season beating Matong at home 3.3 (21) to 1.4 (10).
Incidentally on May 18, a game which Griffith played five men short, resulted in Narrandera's star forward Leo Foley booting 14 goals – an individual goal kicking record against Griffith.
On the Knock-out Carnival scene the local team failed to record a win at either Griffith, Coolamon, Ganmain or Ariah Park. But in the big Leeton Silver Jubilee Carnival where 18 teams completed including two from Victoria (Ardmona and Border United) they did at least manage one victory beating Darlington Point in a preliminary round match.
Ben Clarke represented Riverina at Leeton against the touring Perth F. C. team that included giant Western Australian state ruckman Merv McIntosh, champion full forward Ron Tucker and N. Aitken, a deaf and dumb lad but more than useful winger.
Griffith reserves team bowed out of the Kinlock Cup finals race during the first week, going down to Darlington Point 3.9 (27) to 6.16 (52).
This season also marked the end of Jack Inman reign as club president a position he held since 1938. (Compiled by Trevor Harrison)
