JON O'DWYER NAMED AS NEW SWANS COACH - By Ben Casanella

TWO time Queanbeyan premiership player Jon O'Dwyer has signed a three year deal to coach the Griffith Swans. O'Dwyer, 28, agreed to terms last week and will be in Griffith this weekend to peruse his new surroundings and meet current players at Sunday's reverse raffle draw.
Having played the last two years with Queanbeyan where he also played in the ACTAFL combined side, O'Dwyer's early signing is a real boost for the club according to Swans' secretary Craig Bretherton.
"He's a very experienced player who has a lot of contacts in the football world, he's level headed and knows what it takes to be successful," Bretherton said.
O'Dwyer's resume is impressive to say the least. Prior to moving to Queanbeyan, he played one year with Barooga, has played SANFL and was formerly with the Sydney Swans Under 19 and reserve grade sides.
Playing predominantly at centre half back, O'Dwyer will add some steel to the Swans defence which was fragile for much of the 1999 season.
Currently completing his primary school reaching degree, Bretherton said the club would do all it could to ensure O'Dwyer settles into life in Griffith. "He has already spoken to some of the schools and is pretty confident of getting a job. "We'll do everything we can to help him along the way," he said.
Already Bretherton hinted O'Dwyer had sounded out possible recruits, including an on-ball type player who will be visiting Griffith over the next few weeks. "He told us that he had a couple of players in mind who might be able to bring to the club, but at this stage nothing is confirmed.
"He knows we are looking for a ruckman and there was an onballer coming to Griffith who we hope we can sign," he said. Bretherton added the club was intent on securing a coach the club was intent on securing a coach before going after recruits, and O'Dwyer's early signing will allow a full summer to entice players to pull on the Swans jumper for season 2000.
The club is believed to be strongly chasing a key position player who spent this year playing in the Sunraysia Football League.   (The Area News - Monday, October 1, 1999).
