AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST AWAY MEETINGS WITH TURVEY PARK BULLDOGS - 20.07.24

Fixtures with our opponents on Saturday, Turvey Park, go right back to the very first season of the Bulldogs entry into the South West League in 1956. Over the last 68 years, our two clubs have now played each other 69 times in Wagga Wagga.
Incidentally, the red and whites first away game against Turvey Park, on July 8, 1956, was played at Bolton Park's No. 1 oval, later renamed Robertson Oval in 1963. The game finished 117 - 41 in favour of the Bulldogs, thanks to 8 goals from Turvey Park's captain-coach, Ray Scott and 3 from Rex Burge.
Griffith's one other game at Bolton Park happened on 25th May 1958, the only occasion they won in their first 10 years on the road to the "City of Crows". Don Bitcon and Billy Tyndall starred in the match, bagging 6 goals each, in a 17.4 (106) to 15.11 (101) victory.

The sequence of seven losses in a row came to an end at Gissing Oval on July 17, 1966, when the Griffith team turned on one of their very best efforts to move up into top place and set their sights on winning the Dal Williams Trophy.  From a lot of good players Bob Little was tops while a special mention went out to Joey Whyte in the 109 - 52 thrashing of the inaccurate Bulldogs.
Griffith: — Don Best, Frank Conlan, John Mitchell; Vic Hathaway, Sid Robins, John Fitzpatrick; Bob Munnerley, Angelo Maloni, Joe Whyte; John Kirkwood, John Foley, Kevin Kirkpatrick (c-c); Bill Biron, Gordon Browne, Bill Tyndall; Bob Little, Bob Spears, Mal Russell; John Higgins, Fred Gambell.
In 1984 a brilliant ten goal performance by the scruffy looking Swans centre half forward, Scott 'Bla Bla' Barber's gave Griffith their first ever win against Turvey Park at Maher Oval in a high scoring match, 148 to 132. Barber was the obvious choice for Man of Match award with good games came from Greg Hill, Paul Sparkes, Kenny Collier, Scott Morphett and Gary Waters, while Robert Prest received the umpires award.
