A summary of match report, with thanks
Griffith has finally returned to the winner’s circle, breaking a four-game losing run with a 22-point victory over Narrandera on Saturday afternoon. The Swans overcome another sluggish start to take the lead in the second quarter and were never headed as they ran away with the 13.14 (92) to 10.10 (70) result at Narrandera Sportsground. Tim Matheson continued his stellar season with another best-on-ground performance while spearhead James Toscan slotted five goals. It was a vital win for the Swans, who are now in the box seat for an assault on the top half of the RFL ladder with four home games in five rounds to come after this weekend’s bye.

“That’s probably the nature of the comp this year,” coach Brandon Mathews said. “In fact, I’d be surprised if Narrandera doesn’t beat a few more sides, if they can play like that. “It was good for us to get a win and a bit of confidence – it wasn’t the greatest performance, but everyone did something. “It wasn’t a complete four-quarter effort but probably a bit of reward for effort after the last few weeks.”
Mathews said he was also satisfied with the performance of new signing Jack Ryan, who kicked one goal on debut for the Swans. Ryan was cleared from Gold Coast side Coolangatta-Tweed Heads last week and was named at full forward last season in the South East Queensland AFL’s team of the year.  “He looks a likely type,” Mathews said. “He’s not very big – there’s not much of him – but he went well, having only met everyone on Saturday morning.
The only blight on the win was an incident in the third quarter, which saw Griffith youngster, Tom Shannon reported and sent off for 15 minutes. Shannon will face the RFL tribunal this week after delivering a late hit on a Narrandera player in a marking contest, leaving the Swans a man down at a critical stage of the match. An Eagles player, Ryan Burden was also given his marching orders towards the end of the third team for kicking. Mathews fortuitously arranged to have the match video-taped and after reviewing the footage of the two incidents, said he would be stunned if either player was suspended. “It’s nothing to worry about, I wouldn’t have thought,” he said.
