Match report: Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong Lions journeyed to "channel and chook" country on Saturday last, to play the Griffith Swans. On previous occasions when the teams met on the grand old Ex-Servicemen's Oval, the games have been evenly contested, and close and exciting finishes have often happened. Saturday's game was just the opposite, as far as a close, evenly contested game was concerned. One team, however, was much weaker than that from the past years, but few expected such a terrible drubbing.
It was so disappointing for players and supporters as the Red and Whites can usually be expected to provide something in the nature of fireworks when they met their old rivals. And on top of everything else the 150-point debacle amounted to the greatest ever defeat by a Griffith first grade team when playing on their own home ground. COYS.
Media report - by Jimmy Meiklejohn: Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong enjoyed a successful road trip to Exies Oval taking a 150-point win over Griffith. After wayward kicking in front of goal early, the Lions improved their accuracy in the second term to head into the main break ahead by 70 points. The Lions then booted another 13 goals in the second half as they ran out comfortable 24.22 (166) to 2.4 (16) winners.
GGGM coach Sam Martyn was understandably very happy with his sides performance which sees them improve their record 4-1.
"We spoke regardless of the opposition, we wanted to play four quarters of football," Martyn said. "We've been able to play good footy in patches, but there hasn't been that four quarters of consistent effort on both the offense and defensive sides. "It was really pleasing to see that today especially in the last quarter, you could say the game was beyond doubt, but we tried to play our brand.
"We kept sticking to our structure and it was really pleasing to be able to run away with it." Tom Baluelos returned to the side after a few weeks off and he showed no signs of rust finishing with six goals. Jack Powell also dominated up forward, finishing with five goals while Sid White chipped in with three. Martyn said it was pleasing to Banuelos and Powell combine for an impressive 11-goal haul. "They were fantastic," he said. It was great to have Tommy B back in the side, he just gives us a really good focal point to kick to. Powelly is just such a tough match-up for any opposition team and he was quite good on ball too. "He had some nice moments around the contest, and I think the highlight of the day was seeing a couple of our defenders in Jack Sase and Josh Walsh hit the scoreboard. "That was something that we all really enjoyed seeing and it was a great reward for their defensive efforts." Source - The Daily Advertiser, Tuesday May 13, 2025.
