A summary of match report, with thanks
Griffith Swans coach Brandon Mathews says his team copped a reality check after going down by 46 points to Leeton-Whitton in round one on the Riverina Football League. The Swans travelled to Leeton for the clash and were out-of-sorts from the opening siren against the dominant Crows. A minute’s silence was observed for Stephanie Scott before the game, both teams donning yellow armbands on what was an emotional day for the Leeton community. But when it came time to play, the Crows remained focused and disciplined on their way to a commanding 20.16 (136) to 14.5 (90) victory.
Mathews said Leeton-Whitton were superior to the Swans in every facet. “They blew us away at the start,” Mathews said of the Crows. “Their intensity and attack on the footy was far better than ours. “We let ourselves down pretty badly, to be honest. “Their skills were better, particularly early on. They worked harder for one another and played better as a side.”
The Crows led by 23 points at the first change, and from there it was a long way back for the Swans. Michael Griffiths proved an effective target up front and finished with six goals for the Swans, but Mathews said his team only showed glimpses of its best. “We had patches where we played some good footy,” he said. “We showed what we could do when we got on a bit of a run. “But really, they just smashed us out of the middle of the ground. “We were ordinary, but you can only play as good as the other team lets you.”
Almost as frustrating as the loss for Mathews is what the Swans have to wait another fortnight before they play again because of this week’s split round. “It’s a bit annoying, but there’s not much you can do,” Mathews said. “We were very disappointed with how we played, but we’re not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. “It’s only round one, and there’s a long way still to go. If anything, this has given us a kick in the pants.” (By Andrew Piva – The Area News, Monday April 13, 2015).
