Media report - By Jimmy Meiklejohn: Collingullie-Wagga fended off an enormous late challenge from Ganmain-GGM to claim a five-point win in the Riverina League grand final, securing back-to-back senior premiership. Ahead by as much as 30 points nearing halftime, the Demons found themselves trailing when Aaron Proctor kicked his third goal of the afternoon at the 13-minute mark of the last quarter.
The Demons need a hero, and Sam Stening duly answered the call, booting his fifth goal of the afternoon, entering time on to give Collingullie-Wagga back the lead. There were some massive game-changing moments late in the contest, including a hugely critical tackle laid by 16-year-old Joe Stone in the final 30 seconds when the ball was in GGGM's forward line. In the end, the Demons did enough to hold on for a thrilling 10.7 (67) to 8.14 (62) win over the Lions.
Demons co-coach Shane Lenon revealed he was extremely nervous in the closing moments of the contest, despite his apparent calm appearance on the bench. "My heart was going at a million miles an hour," Lenon said. "Like the duck on the top of the water, you look calm on the top, but your legs are going a million miles an hour under the water. "We kicked that goal with two or three minutes to go, and we were under enormous pressure, but they stood up. "They had to stand up as the game was slipping away from us. Stenno took that great mark and kicked that goal."
Everything went right for the Demons in the first half, booting seven goals to take a 29-point lead into the sheds at the main break. The same could not be said for their grand final opponents in the Lions, who were going through a patch of deja vu, wasting numerous shots at goal to sit at 1.10 after two quarters of footy.
Lenon said he wasn't surprised about their first-half dominance; however, he knew the Lions would respond in a big way in the second half. "We had the game on our terms," he said. "We were really good at the contest, but losing Prez (Ed Perryman) hurt us. He was on absolute fire early, he was winning the ball at the coalface, then he went down with his knee. 'That changed the complexion of the game a little bit, but obviously they lost Jacob Olsson as well, that's footy."
The Lions did respond in a big way in the second half, with three quick goals whittling down Collingullie-Wagga's lead to 10 points at the 11-minute mark of the third term. Steadying goals to Stening and Tom Howard gave the Demons some breathing space; however, the Lions came once again with red-time goals to Proctor, Jack Powell and Dan Foley, reducing the margin to a single kick at three quarter time.
There were only two goals in the final quarter, Proctor to give the Lions a one-point lead and then Stening's reply roughly five minutes later to win the game for the Demons. Stening was duly rewarded for his massive five goal performance, being awarded the Hutchins Medal for best-on-ground. Source - The Daily Advertiser, Monday Sept 15, 2025.
