Media report - by Jimmy Meiklejohn: Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes fired late to secure a thrilling five-point victory on the road against Griffith. Trailing by eight points at the last change, the Goannas booted three final term goals to run out 8.6 (54) to 7.7 (49) victors against the Swans. While they didn't quite get the four points, it was a much-improved effort from the Swans who went down by 150 points last weekend against Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong.
Griffith coach Greg Dreyer said he was proud of the response from his side. "I was happy," Dreyer said. "Obviously not happy with the result, but we copped a fair flogging, and we've had a couple of those against the top sides. We're a long way off the pace, but to come back out and really compete hard, to be honest it was two young sides just having a real crack. "We had our opportunities, I think we let it slip and that was disappointing. I know the boys were pretty disappointed in the sheds, I think that we had a good reaction from them, they are trying hard and we're training well, we're pretty young and I was happy with how they had a crack."
Sixteen-year-old Zavier Mitchell finished with two goals for the Swans in a very impressive first-grade debut. Dreyer credited the performance of Mitchell, noting the teenager has made the step up to first grade via a couple of games in the reserves. "Zav's still 16 but he's a big fella," he said. "He's got some natural instincts as a forward player; he'll be a key forward player when he gets a bit older. We had him there at full forward and Bede Kenny who's 18 at centre half forward, Will Vaessen he's 19 at centre half back.
"We had another debut in Mason Ashcroft at fullback who's 20 so we have a lot of boys under 21 today and that's a positive. We seem to be able to get the juniors, it's just being patience and working hard and they are doing that. We are pretty happy about Zav, he's a good kid and did well." Ben Browning, Ben Dinning and Sam Foley were among Griffith's better players in their narrow loss.

Browning arrived at the club over the off-season and Dreyer thought his game against MCUE was easily his best for Griffith. "He just worked hard Ben, he's just a good footballer and he's up for the contest," he said. "He's one of those blokes that doesn't give up." Source - The Daily Advertiser, Tuesday May 20, 1925.
