Media report - By Jimmy Meiklejohn: A sensational opening term guided Coolamon to a 19-point win over local rivals Ganmain-GGM in the qualifying final. The Hoppers stated their intentions early at Narrandera Sportsground, booting six goals to one in a dominant first-quarter performance. Up 32 points at the first change, Coolamon were able to dictate the proceedings for the remaining three quarters. The Lions kicked the last two goals of the contest. But it was little too late as Coolamon ran out 10.6 (66) to 6.11 (47) winners, setting up a clash against minor premiers Collingullie-Wagga next Saturday.
Fancying their chances against the Lions heading into the showdown final, Coolamon coach Gavin McMahon was pleased his side could get the result against the local rivals. "I'm excited for the boys that they got the W," McMahon said. "But part of me expected us to play really good today so it takes a little bit of the enjoyment out of it I suppose. "We expected to do well and Ganmain are a great side, you're got to play good footy for all but half of one quarter."
Coolamon's early dominance was on the back of an absurd amount of pressure and a desire to win the footy at the source. Having put together a game plan at the start of the year with finals footy at Narrandera in mind, McMahon was glad to see it implemented strongly against the Lions. "I think what you saw there was just a commitment to our game style and a hell of a lot of enthusiasm," he said. "There was plenty to play for, Coolamon and Ganmain games are always full of plenty of additional feeling and today was no different from our side. "I'm not sure it was the same from theirs, but I'm just really proud of the boys, we've been working on our style all year. "Your aim is to be able to get it right on Narandera at the end of the year and they got it right today."
McMahon found it hard to single out top performers. However, he noted that the milestone duo in Luke Redfern and Cooper McKelvie was fantastic in their 100th games. "It is hard to single out in all honesty," McMahon said. "I thought our midfield and their contested ball work was outstanding. "I thought the back line was great, led by Timmy Coenen and BJ Glyde. "Reilly Mitchell was also pretty influential late in the game too. "Then our forward half worked really well, and it was good to see Nick Buch return to a bit of form after a quiet week last week."
GGGM coach Sam Martyn took full responsibility for their loss. "It's disappointing from our perspective," Martyn said. "As a coach you take full responsibility too, I think I tried to over complicate things at times with rotations and personnel. I definitely learnt a great deal from it, and I apologised to the boys for putting them in that position. "It's always tough but you can't dwell on it too long because we've got another game now to win, we have to turn our attention pretty quickly to that."
Martyn praised Matt Hamblin's effort noting that the midfielder had done everything in his power to try and get the Lions over the line. "Matty was clearly our best on with five (goals)," he said. "It felt like at times he was willing us along and putting us on his back, trying to do everything he could to win the game for us."
A yellow card to key forward Tom Banuelos in the early stages of the final term for a dangerous tackle on Coolamon's Braeden Glyde also added further salt to the wound for the Lions. Source - The Daily Advertiser, Monday August 27, 2025.
