Media report - By Jimmy Meiklejohn: Narrandera overcome a spirited challenge from Griffith to claim a 20-point victory on the road at Exies Oval. The venue hasn't been a happy hunting ground in recent years for the Eagles, with their last win at Exies Oval coming over 15 years ago. After a slow start the Eagles made the most of the wind advantage in the second term to head into the main break by up by 15 points. Crucially they then held their own against the wind in the third quarter to remain ahead by eight points with a term to play. Narrandera then kicked three goals in the final term to secure the 10.9 (69) to 7.7 (49) victory, their third win of the season.
Eagles coach Mark Carroll was thrilled with his side's performance, noting it was great to end a long period of very little success at Exies Oval. "It's difficult to go to Griffith and win," Carroll said. They've told me it's been 16 years since Narrandera last beat Griffith at Griffith so that's pretty special. We've been a bit unlucky during the year in a few different games where we thought we could've won. "It's great to get some award, the boys and a lot of people have put in a lot of hard work, and they deserve the win today."
Cooper Irons finished with three goals up forward while Josh Boag, Jayden Carroll and Cooper Lee were all among Narrandera's best in their 20-point win. Carroll credited the performance of Boag in the midfield, however revealed might've picked up an injury. "He played well today though the middle," he said. "I think he might've tweaked a bit off the hamstring. I hope it's not too bad, but he missed the last quarter or so. "Hopefully he's okay, but he played well."
While not potentially reaching the heights they would've have liked this season, Carroll said it was pleasing to see his side still cracking in and giving their all in the final few games of the year. "They're shown a lot of resilience this group," he said. "We've played some very good football at times, against the better teams and I've been told the scoreboard hasn't reflected what our games have been like. "It's very pleasing to get some reward today, the boys deserved it." Source - The Daily Advertiser, Monday July 28, 2025.
Media report - By Liam Warren: The Griffith Swans were left to rue not taking the advantage of early dominance against Narrandera, with the Eagles coming away with a 20-point win. It was a wet and windy afternoon at Exies Oval, and it looked like the game would become a slog with only one goal mustered in the first quarter. In what was a collector's item for the Swans' newest 100-gamer, captain Sam Foley kicked the major, which saw the home side take an eight-point lead into that first change.
The Swans got quickly out of the blocks in the second quarter, with Oliver Bartter kicking his first for the afternoon from the bounce, but the Eagles saw off a charge from the Swans and were able to mount a charge with the breeze behind them. Goals to Blake Renet and Stirling Kable saw the Eagles take the lead, while two to Cooper Irons before halftime saw the Narrandera side up by 15 points at the break.
Foley felt that the breakout from the Eagles after the Swans had the run early was what made the difference. "I think in the first quarter we dominated the footy, just couldn't put it on the scoreboard," he said. "Even in the first half of the second quarter, we owned the footy, we just let them kick four goals late, and it was a too big a hill to climb in the end."
A second to Oliver Bartter and one to Bailey Morrissey early in the third term saw the margin reduced to three points, but the Eagles were able to kick away again with both Kable and Renet both adding their second of the afternoon.
While Bartter was able to make the most of the wind with two goals from inside the centre square, a goal from Narrandera in between saw the Eagles take an eight-point lead into the final term. It was a slog in the final term, but the Eagles were able to kick three goals to one in the final term to come away with a 10.9 (69) to 7.7 (49) win.
In the inclement conditions, Foley felt his side had probably taken too long to make the necessary adjustments. "I think we just weren't direct enough and the weather probably comes into that a little bit," he said. "We were over using it, and I think we should have been giving one handball and then looking to go long, and we probably took a bit too long to switch into it."
The derby will be next up for the Swans when they welcome Leeton-Whitton to Exies Oval for their final home game of the season.
There is a sense of chasing redemption after falling in the encounter earlier in the season. "That was the worst we have played when we played them over in Leeton," he said. "We have a bit to prove and we 'd really love to finish the year off at home with a win."
