A summary of match report, with thanks
Griffith Swans coach Guy Orton has laid down the law to his side in the
aftermath of their 25-point loss to Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes, saying if they don’t improve their commitment, they will again miss out on Riverina Football Leagues finals.

The blunt assessment comes as the Swans stumbled out of the blocks in the run towards the post-season, so much so that Orton called a compulsory training session yesterday morning.

The Area News has learned 15 players were put through their paces with four apologies due to work commitments and two players not arriving without an excuse. Despite not a 100 per cent attendance rate, Orton said he was happy with the extra training session but added it’s time for the side to start playing the way he knows it’s capable of.

“I was quite happy with that (extra training), but now we realise that we’ve made it tough for ourselves and they have that picture in their heads that we really can’t lose any more games from here on out,” Orton said.
When asked if the general bye last weekend in fact hurt his side’s rhythm, Orton said it might of, but added that with no breaks until the end of the season they need to bounce back quickly. “It has a little bit but what I’m really trying to push now is the lack of commitment from everyone,” he said. “So that’s why we have compulsory training sessions (Sunday), just to see how many people are committed and how many of them want to play finals footy.”
Orton reminded his players of the pain suffered by the first-grade side when they missed out of the RFL finals by mere percentage points in 2011, adding that four games remaining their fate was still in their hands. “The commitment of the boys turning up this morning, I don’t want to be doing this (training after every game), but it’s what we have to do as a group to move forward.”
Game summary: Swans grabbed a two-goal lead at the end of the first term only to see the Goannas storm back to grab a 12-point lead at the long break. The home side then pushed their advantage before running away with the game in the final term and were it not for three late majors from the Swans, the final margin could have been much worse for the side in red and white.
