A summary of match report, with thanks
Just weeks ago, Leeton-Whitton lay coughing and spluttering on its RFL deathbed but yesterday it ended Griffith's season and moved into next week's first semi-final against Narrandera. The Crows are a different team to the one travelling from ground to ground and being flogged week in, week out by lowly teams leading into the finals. Yesterday they out-hustled, out-run and most importantly outscored Swans to win 17.13 (115) to 14.10 (94). A team that just scraped into the finals by the hair of its teeth now finds itself pitted against Narrandera, an outfit that has beaten them just once in the last three years, albeit the last time they met.
The Crows led at every break and although Griffith did fight hard in the last term, the result never really looked in doubt.
The feeling in the Leeton-Whitton sheds afterwards was jubilant after the strong team performance led forcefully by ruck Kurt Bullock, Greg Looby in the backline and a very dangerous Daryl Clayton up forward. "We talked all week about how we wanted passion out there, strength in the midfield and just hard tackling and that's what happened," Crows' captain-coach Jamie Broadbent said.
"The best thing though was it was a team effort. Griffith kept coming at us, but we just kept stepping up."
The pressure the Crows applied to Griffith with their hustle was instrumental in breaking the Swans down.
There were uncharacteristic Swans mistakes all over the place, passes going nowhere, turnovers, free kicks given away and Leeton-Whitton took advantage of them. It was a disappointing performance from the Swans but to the Crows credit they are a different outfit to recent weeks, and this will only lift their spirits. (The Area News, Monday August 29, 2005).
