A summary of match report, with thanks
The Griffith Swans have got the monkey off their backs after recording their first win of the Riverina Football League season, after edging out the Coolamon Hoppers by 48 points at Exies Oval yesterday. It had been a bumpy start for Griffith, with two big losses putting the handbrake on any possible early season charge to the top of the ladder. But that changed as the Swans toughed it out against a bigger Coolamon side, which coach Guy Orton saying his simply did not want to give up the lead. “We fought all day and by the time we got in front in the first quarter we just kept going and going and that’s exactly what I asked of the boys from the word go,” Orton said. “Everyone gave 100 per cent because none of them wanted to look a teammate in the eye at the end of the game and say they did not give everything.”
In yesterday’s win starts a run of form for the red and whites, they might look back to an extra training session on Saturday morning as being the turning point, as the senior group broke their game down, only to build it back up again yesterday.
Griffith held a narrow lead of just two points at the end of the first break as the Hoppers hung on to still be within touch at the long break, trailing by 17. The home side kept Coolamon at an arm’s length in the third term before blowing them off the park in the final quarter scoring seven goals to run out deserved winners. Jethro Calma-Holt showed no signs of his calf injury in kicking five goals for Griffith, with Orton bagging four goals, with Mick Duncan and James Toscan being the other multiple goal kickers.

James Toscan was a tower of strength for Griffith along with Che Jenkins, while young gun Fletcher Josling continues to impress with his fearless attitude, in what is only his second game in the top grade. Coolamon’s Luke Maloney, Connor Neyland, Rick Pritchett, Trent Bullock and Jesse Rapley did their best to try and turn the tide of the game, but it was the Swans’ game to lose.
Griffith does have two injury concerns from the game with Dean Crack missing the second half due to a hit on the head and concussion-like symptoms. Ricky Daniher copped a shot to the ribs and is expected to have X-rays tomorrow to see if he will miss any game time.
