Media report - By Jimmy Meiklejohn: Ganmain-GGM responded with a statement, as they claimed a 58-point win over Turvey Park in the first semi-final. Caught napping in the opening term last week against Coolamon, the Lions didn't repeat that same mistake, booting six unanswered goals to open the game. Taking a three-goal lead into the first change, it was in the second that the Lions really got to work at Maher Oval. Heading to the sheds up by 44 points, GGGM were then able to control ascendancy in the remaining two quarters. While Turvey Park kept throwing up challengers, the Lions always had a response, eventually running out 20.8 (128) to 10.10 (70) winners.
With their season on the line, GGGM coach Sam Martyn was absolutely blown away by the performance of his side. "It's pretty remarkable the footy we played today," Martyn said. "We had full confidence that we could do it; it was just about executing what we spoke about. I think the game at Ganmain taught us a lot of lessons in terms of how we need to play against Turvey and what they do really well."
"We were able to do what we exactly spoke about pre-game; it was more about 22 blokes playing their roll," Martyn said. "That's exactly what it looked like, Matt Hamblin was extraordinary when he had the footy in hand, Dan Foley, and Tommy Anderson were also great.
"But it was the players like Jesse Lander, Shannon Butterfield and Joe Foley who had specific roles and stuck to them, which made us such a good football side today." While club leaders like Dan Foley, Jack Sase, Tommy Quinn and Zac Burhop all played superbly well, what was most exciting was the efforts of some of their emerging young talents.
Jake Fairman was simply outstanding for the Lions while Joe Foley and Braith Gain combined for five goals. Martyn agreed some of their young guns were sensational in their 58-point win. "There were six players who still qualify for under 17.5 that played footy today in the Lions guernsey at senior level," he said. "It's super exciting to see these guys not only play but perform. That young core is extremely tantalising."
Already entering the clash without Tom Banuelos and Aaron Procter, who missed the semi-final through suspension, the Lions were thrown another curve ball with the late omission of Jack McCaig. In a bold move, the Lions opted to call up teenager Zac McPherson to make his first-grade debut in the sudden-death final. "He was pulled at the 15-minute make of the fourth quarter (under 17.5) when Jack McCaig was unavailable," Martyn said. "I'm sure it was a shock for him, but as soon as he was tapped on the shoulder, he said he was keen as."
He was used sparingly; it's not the ideal debut in terms of playing time, but it was really nice moments. You can see again how promising a footballer he's going to be." Source - The Daily Advertiser, Tuesday September 2, 2025.
