Match report: The Griffith Swans AFLW side can take plenty of positives from their narrow defeat at the hands of CSU last Friday. It was a tough contest between the two evenly matched teams, but it was the Bushpigs who were able to come out on top with a 28 to 25 win. The Swans were ahead by a point at the first change before the side went in level at the main break at 9-all. The sides were inseparable at the end of the third term sitting at 16-16, but it was the CSU side who were able to hang on at the final siren
In the act of sportsmanship, which some may feel came back to bite the Swans, coach Trevor Richards chose to look at the big picture and help the CSU side who were short of numbers. "They only had 12 players to start with, so we gave them two players for the whole game and swapped it each quarter," he said.
"Have had a few people had a go at me afterwards, but it's girls footy and I want everyone to get a go. If I didn't give them any players, then I have girls sitting on the sidelines watching instead of playing. "Yes, in hindsight, maybe I should have just taken two girls off for the last quarter to make sure we get the win, but I'm trying to make all the girls get a run so hopefully they enjoy it and keep coming back." "I feel a lot of the girls learnt a lot from the weekend because a lot of them had never played footy before and in some cases never really watched too much footy. "Having that one game under their belt, they still have a lot to learn, but they have a better idea of what to do and the rules."

Match report: The Griffith Swans Womens side was able to pick up their first victory of the season in front of a vocal crowd on Friday night. After coming close in their opening round of the season (with CSU Bushpigs), there were a couple of tough games against GGGM Lions, North Wagga and East Wagga-Kooringal Hawks, the Swans were able to get the breakthrough with a 31 to 2 win over the Brookdale Bluebells.
Coach Trevor Richards said it was a nice boost for the side to be able to pick up the four points. "It is good for the confidence levels," he said. "I think we have played pretty well in all our games, we have just come across stronger teams."
In what was likely to be the Swans final home game of the season, Richards said the girls enjoyed playing in front of a strong crowd (about 100). "It was good to see so many people down here to support them," he said. "They all came down here to have a crack and a good time, and it is good to have people yelling out their names from the sideline supporting them."
While saying the points were a nice bonus, the more pleasing aspect for Richards was seeing what the team had been working on starting to be shown on the field. "We have plenty of girls who aren't afraid to go into a tackle," he said. "It is something that we have been working on between that and working on the girls running off and looking to receive handballs. "Things like that started to show up a bit tonight."
The Swans will have one concern heading into their final game of the regular season with CSU after Lauren Marshall came from the field late against Brookdale with a knee injury.
