 GRIFFITH CLUB NOTES

GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" April 18, 1998 - No. 1

FIRSTLY, I would like to join with everyone at the Club and congratulate the 1997 Reserve Grade premiership team on their effort back in September last year. The guys were tremendous and have enjoyed a long summers celebration.
I am sure everyone at the Club would like to congratulate the three coaches on their appointments for 1998. Firstly, Phil Rowston has returned as senior coach after a stint in the Ovens & Murray League. Adrian Pavese has been appointed U18's coach for the first time after much success in the U15's and Craig Bretherton continues as Reserve's coach.
To Anthony Pavey and George Duncan, last season's senior and U18's coaches we thank you for your efforts. To those departing members of the committee we thank you for your efforts, in particular Darrell Collins for his efforts as President.
Many new players have joined the Club this season and to those players and their families we welcome you. Also, to those players returning to the club after time away, as we look forward to a successful season.
We would like to congratulate Greg and Karen Collins, Jason and Tanya Magoci, Wayne and Melissa Bodycott, Tony and Sarah Mahar, and Danny and Kerri-Anne Baxter on their marriages over the summer period.

Congratulations must also go to Phil Rowston and Kirsty Collins on their engagement.
The Club would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rivcoll & Ganmain-GGM for their efforts in travelling to Griffith for pre-season games. On a sad note, all the Club offer their condolences to Corey Frater on the passing of his grandfather last week.

GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" August 23, 1998 - No. 19

A terrific day for the Griffith Australian Football Club is the best way to describe the efforts last Sunday. The Seniors rallied against a willing MCUE opposition in inclement conditions to win after being behind at half time. It was a great team effort, and we need to continue with the same level of intensity going into the weeks ahead if we want to keep on winning.

Unfortunately, the netballers had to forfeit after being unable to get enough numbers. Bad luck to those who tried to make it work this year and thanks for the efforts of those who committed themselves.

Congratulations goes to George Duncan and the premiership winning Under 15's team on their victory in last week's South West District Juniors footy grand final.

DESPITE many wasted opportunities in front of goal in the first half the Seniors were well placed to win the game at three quarter time but were overrun by a determined GGGM opposition. The players must maintain the intensity for four quarters if they want to continue on in September.

GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" September 6, 1998 - No. 21

ON a sad note, the committee, players, members and supporters of the Griffith Australian Football Club would like to offer their sincere condolences to Margot, Christian, Danny and Jeanne on the passing away after a long illness last Saturday of Brian Files.

A popular man and a real character. Brian served the football club extremely well having been a past President and Treasurer, as well as being a member of the committee for many years. His presence around the place will no doubt be missed by those people lucky enough to have been involved with Brian through either business or pleasure. A true character who will be sorely missed.
A big crowd saw the Senior comfortably defeated by a very strong Wagga Tigers opposition. They were never in the hunt after quarter time and although they had a minor fightback early in the third quarter, they were all outclassed in the last. We must bounce back as it is now or die.

The awards were sponsored by Martin & Webb / Wickham Hill Packaging and were as follows: The Griffith Ex-Servicemen's Club award was won by Tony "Golly" Mahar, the Billabong Bottle Shop award was won by Aaron "The Glenormiston Terror" O'Keefe, the Prendy's BP award was won by Matthew "the unwashed" Cox, and the Lowes award was won by Paul "rookie" Kite.
The Reserves were well beaten by a more committed opposition. The awards where the Players' Player Mug was won by Jason "100 lashers" Vaccari, $30 to Paul "Blocker" Brasier, $20 to Tony "Master Blaster" Butcher and $10 to Jason "Follow me" Catanzariti.
The Under 18's performed very well and showed they deserve to be in third spot and with a chance to improve over the next few weeks. The awards were $15 to Shane Russell, $10 to Michael Duncan and $5 to Nick Maloni, The McDonalds / Griffith Coaches award was won by Jake Maguire.
Our best and fairest vote count was last Sunday, and congratulations goes to the winners in each grade being Tony Mahar in the Seniors in a very close finish with 2 votes separating 5 players going into the last game. Tony Butcher winning the Reserves and Jake Maguire winning the Under 18's.

GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" September 13, 1998 - No. 22

WITH the Seniors and Reserve Grade both defeated by Narrandera in the elimination final, the Under 18's are left to represent the club in this week's first semi final against Leeton-Whitton. Best of luck to them and lets all hope they can advance to the preliminary final next week with a win.
The Seniors were in front for the majority of the match but did not make the most of their use of the wind in the third quarter and were run over in the final term. The players can be proud of their efforts but must use this season as a stepping stone for 1999. The best players included Mathew "Manuel" Cox, Daniel "Mutley" Tuohey, Matthew "Big O" Olney, Phil "Rowdy" Rowston. Tony "Golly" Mahar and Glenn "Fidget" Vaccari.
The Reserves were behind all day and despite a minor comeback in the final term were defeated. The best players were Paul "Norm" Brasier, Michael "Mad Mick" Claydon, Jason "Jooce" Catanzariti, Kane "MM Bop" Duncan, Owen "O" Brown and Justin "The Big Oaf" Sanson.
The Under 18's in the qualifying final against Turvey Park battled manfully all day after a slow start to get within striking distance at three quarter time but could not finish the game off. The boys battled hard to get their chance this week to have a win and stay alive in the finals. The best payers included Stephen Mitchell, Marc Forster, Michael Duncan, Michael Elliott and Shane Russell.
Many thanks go to Phil Rowston for his efforts with the club this season. The lemon was not as sour as some people suggested and Phil and the players can be proud of their efforts after being touted as bottom three material pre-season. On the social scene do not forget about the 1998 best and fairest presentation night to be held at the Griffith Ex-Servicemen's Club on Friday 16th October. Thanks also goes to those people who assisted with the catering last weekend. Your donation of time and effort is appreciated by the committee.
