Match report: Griffith Swans' Southern NSW League season started with a draw against Narrandera Eagles at Exies No. 2 Oval on Friday evening. The game started under lightening and heavy grey skies, with a downpour a real threat.

Unfortunately for the home side however, they got off to the worst possible start in the opening minutes, captain Grace Buchan going off with a suspected season ending knee PCL injury.

The opening quarter was relatively even, with the home side looking to spread the ball wide and use their flanks to advantage but for all their good efforts only three points were scored. The second term play was much the same with either side unable to break through the defensive lines and add to their opening quarter scores.

With half-time approaching, the field umpires called a halt to play when a flash of lightening lit up the night sky. Any chance for the resumption of play was put to rest about half an hour later when a thunderstorm hit the ground.

In a game of extremely few scoring chances, Griffith probably felt slightly aggrieved at not taking all four points, after holding territorial advantage for the vast majority of the game. But as the rules stand because the game was declared abandoned before half-time the two teams will split the points as it constitutes a draw. If the game finishes after half-time, whoever is in front is the winning team.

Match report: When the final "hooter" rang the pent-up excitement of the Northern Jets supporters found vent in wild cheers, and they rushed onto the ground to congratulate their girls. It was gut and determination that pulled them through. This really was a great game of football, both sides were looking to get the ball moving and there was no lack of good play. The play in all four quarters was very willing, the players being knocked over like nine pins. Both teams suffered some pain, but it caused no great diversion for the sets of supporters, and also apparently for the umpires.
In the last quarter the play became a little exciting, especially towards the end, when Summer Carlon kicked a goal and got the Swans within three points of the lead. However, Jets, having enjoyed the lead for most of the match, were in no mood to relinquish any advantage, and were able to see out the closing minutes to achieve victory, 24 to 21. As the home side had in their ranks many who knew little about the game but all showed out much better than the last time they played. Special mention to the new players Lucy Payne, Ella Gaske, Amie-Lee Gibbs and Madelaine Hunt.

CHANGERS TO ENSURE FAIRER OUTCOME - By Courtney Rees

AFL Riverina is still searching for the right recipe with another change to the structure of the Southern NSW Women's competition.
Last year, teams were split into four pools based on geography with four separate ladders. This season, teams will be divided into two pools. However, only one ladder will determine who qualifies for the three-week final series.
The pools will again be split geographically. One pool will be around Wagga, while the others will feature eight clubs north of the city.
Trying to limit the impact travel has on the competition is the main factor behind how the pools were determined. AFL Riverina's competition coordinator Di Anderson believes the new approach will simplify the final equation.
"Being only eight rounds, we will have eight teams in each pool, but it will still be one ladder," Anderson said. "Last year we had a couple of ladders and at the end it was the top in each pool, but this time it's just one overall ladder."
The season will start on February 7. Teams will play everyone in their pool once, and there will be one round of crossovers games to complete the home and away season.
AFL Riverina feels this will be a better approach. "We found with four pools a couple of the teams meant one pool was stronger than the other three so the bottom of one pool didn't make finals and they probably should have," Anderson said.
AFL Riverina considered feedback from clubs looking to extend the season. However, they have elected to keep the season at eight weeks. As it stands, there will already be a more significant crossover between the start of the Riverina League and Farrer League seasons than ever before. The women's grand final will be played on April 17, the Thursday before Easter.
Before the season reaches its pinnacle, three rounds of the Farrer League and two rounds of the Riverina League are expected to be played. It was part of the reason against expanding the women's competition this season.
Pool One: Brookdale Bluebells, Collingullie-Wagga Demons, CSU Bushpigs, EWK Hawks, MCUE Goannas, North Wagga Saints, Turvey Park Bulldogs and Wagga Tigers.
Pool Two: Coolamon Hoppers, GGGM Lions, Griffith Swans, Leeton-Whitton Crows, Marrar Bombers, Narrandera Eagles, Northern Jets and Temora Kangaroos.   (The Area News - Monday November 11, 2024).
