AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST HOME MEETINGS WITH MANGOPLAH-COOKARDINA UNITED-EASTLAKES GOANNAS - 13.04.24
AFTER having to make the longest journey in Riverina League football - 150 miles as the crow flies - perhaps it's not surprising that Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes took 13 visits to the Griffith Exies Oval to record their first away win. That victory by the Goannas was 16 years ago whereas the Swans were near the bottom section of the RFL ladder.
Swans' coach Gerard Toscan said his side's 64-point loss was their worst game of the 2008 year.
Griffith: Michael Tyndall, Simon Spiers, Sam Gilbert; Jason Bertacco, Matthew Kenny, Jonathon Gastin; Luke Piccolo, Michael Johns, James Smith; Ben Ford, Glen Snaidero, Brett Davis; Andrew Cappello, Craig Conlan, Jack Geddes; Shaun Curran, Michael Duncan, Brett Owen; Kris Duncan, David Pasin, Craig Lugton.
Mangoplah-CUE: Brett Howard, Jai Warden, Trent Cohalan; Jake Phillips, Stace Creasy, Chris Higgins, Jeff Millar, Brad Roberson, Brad Turner; Dean Howard, Jordan Foster, Geoff Spriggs; Graeme Reid, Dylan de Britt, Curtis Richens; Matt Molkentin, Jarrod Kahlefeldt, Brad Pattison; Sam Balding, Jack Killalea, Shaun Bennett.
Since then, Griffith has met Mangoplah at home on a further 15 occasions for just six victories. When the yellow and blue hoops were here last year, April 15, the game ended in a dramatic draw after a thrilling contest. The draw was the first in 61 games between the two clubs since Mangoplah-Cookardinia United joined the Riverina Football League in 1995.

AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST HOME MEETINGS WITH LEETON-WHITTON CROWS - 20.04.24
HOME ground advantage does not always dominate fixtures between Griffith and Leeton-Whitton when played on the Griffith Exies Oval. Of the 28 matches played there since 1995, 18 have resulted in home wins against ten losses. Saturday's game will, we trust, continue the series in the same vein.
The clubs' very first meetings since Leeton amalgamated with Whitton-Yanco to become the Leeton-Whitton United Football Club was on Saturday June 3, 1995, with the home side taking all four points, 107-76. "Billy" McGowan, the charismatic full forward who enjoyed huge popularity with Swans supporters chipped in with eight majors.
A year later the result was the same except this time, Swans without captain coach Phil Rowston sidelined with a season ending injury, started the game with a ten goal first quarter blitz to thrash the Crows 158-15.
Griffith: Dean Jamieson, Trevor Clarke, Jamie Bennett, Damien Scott, Chris Conlan, Don Moran, Brian Evans, Scott Lord, Greg Collins, Mick Smith, Gary Argus, Matt Bunn, Tim Fraser, Glenn Smith, Mark Brown, Brian Stanislaus, Daniel Tuohey, Patrick Dempsey, Mathew Cox, Brenton Harrison.
Other notable clashes include 87-93 loss for the Swans in 2013. Brendan Fevola, the 32-year-old AFL Coleman Medalist who entertained so many people in his Carlton days, made his one-off appearance with Griffith. The "Fev" backing up after kicking nine goals for Yarrawonga the previous day did not disappoint the 1500 onlookers by booting seven. But it was Crows' teenager Brad Boots with a goal after the siren that consigned the Swans to a six-point loss to their arch-rivals.
Griffith: Royce Johns, Richard Malone, James Taylor; Jonathon Gastin, Jack Tyrell, Tim Matheson; Tom West, Che Jenkins, Daniel Moysey; James Fallon, James Toscan, Mathew Crack; Kris Duncan, Brendan Fevola, Dean Crack; Joel Gordon, Guy Orton (c-c), Michael Duncan; Glen Snaidero, Brandon Mathews, Tom Webb, Daniel Peruzzi
Leeton-Whitton: Jarrod Gornall, Nathan Carn, Chris Downes; Sean Browning, Will Overs, Craig Townsend; Jonathon Spina, Ben Curley, Matthew Irvin; Brad Boots, Kodie O'Malley, Tom Meline; Greg Halden, Joshua King, Grant Commins; Mason Dryburgh, Bryce O'Garey, Lachlan O'Callaghan; Tom Morton, Siale Howe, Jordie Petitt, Josh O'Callaghan.
In all the games played at Exies Oval since their last loss in 2017, the year Leeton-Whitton were Riverina Football League premiers, the Griffith Swans have definitely had the upper hand with five wins to nil.
Swans record against Crows at Griffith Exies Oval: Played 28, Won 18, Lost 10, Draw 0.
Biggest Swans win: 23.20 (158) - 1.9 (15), R10, June 23, 1996.
Biggest Crows win: 22.20 (152) - 6.11 (47), R1, April 8, 2000.

AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST AWAY MEETINGS WITH NARRANDERA IMPERIAL EAGLES - 04.05.24
No other club have played Griffith more times in Football League matches than Narrandera Imperial.
The clubs first meeting came on King George's Birthday, Monday June 3, 1929, at Narrandera Park. It was reported that the locals fielded a representative team, but the visitors did not play up to expectations, with the result that the Imperials won comfortably.
1935 was the year Griffith, together with Narrandera linked up with the Leeton & District Football Association in an inter town competition. Griffith known as the "Tigers" played their first semi-final match against Narrandera East on the new Narrandera Sportsground on Sunday, July 28th. The match was reported as one of the most exciting seen in the town for years. The Melbourne umpire, T.S. Mitchell, wrote in his report: - "A good game, played hard and fast, but in a good sporting spirit. My congratulations to both teams." After leading by nine points five minutes before the final bell, the Griffith side was beaten 41 points to 38.

AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST HOME MEETINGS WITH TURVEY PARK BULLDOGS - 11.05.24
ON Saturday at the Exies Oval, Griffith welcome Turvey Park for the 72nd meeting between the two clubs, a series which began on May 16, 1956, a 5th round clash of South West League football. It has to be said that the League's newcomers had the better of things that Sunday afternoon, going home with a one-point victory 63-62. The Bulldog's win was mainly due to the seven goals kicked by their new coach Ray Scott, a champion WAFL goal kicker recruited from West Perth.
In fact, it took the men in red and white five matches to get the better of Bulldogs on the Griffith Showground.
Griffith: — Charlie O'Brien, Geoff Habel, Don Buchanan; Wally Price (c-c), Vic Ledwidge, Frank Conlan; Vince O'Dwyer, John Conlan, Kevin McMahon; Jim Fielder, Frank Carroll, Don Guest; Bill Tyndall, Don Bitcon, Noel Tyndall; Bill Biron, Don Maples, Vic Hathaway; Don Hurst, Bruce Cobden.

The two clubs have been great rivals over the years, but Griffith had the Indian sign over Turvey Park in recent football campaigns. AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST AWAY MEETINGS WITH GANMAIN-GRONG GRONG-MATONG LIONS - 18.05.24
Home ground advantage seems to dominate fixtures between the Lions and Swans at Ganmain Sportsground. Of 44 matches played since Ganmain amalgamated with Grong Grong-Matong in 1982, only twelve have resulted in away wins. The club's first meeting in the Riverina Football League at Ganmain was on August 15, 1982, when the new boys beat the Swans 96-63.
Griffith: - Grant Luhrs (c-c), Paul Baldi, Glenn Harrison, Rowan Smith, Peter McGrath, Max Turner, Warren Foy, Wayne Bottcher, Gerard Toscan, Martin O'Donnell, Ian Wade, Kelvin Turner, John Seidel, David Taylor, Robbie Owen, Richard Turner, Bob Berton, John Toscan, Brett McAlister, Graeme Lyons.
Griffith's next away clash on Sunday July 24, 1983, a convincing 134-86 victory came into place over the home side.
One could not forget Andrew Romagnolo senior debut and for first time all year the whole team contributing towards coach Bobby Greenwood's hard work and dedication with Paul "Spaceman" Sparkes and Damien "The Whale" Ryan scoring 10 goals between them.
Griffith: - Jamie Robinson, Gary Waters, Glenn Harrison, Darrell Collins, Damien Ryan, Paul Sparkes, Roy Agresta, Wayne Bottcher, Gerard Toscan, Martin O'Donnell, Ian Wade, Stephen Buchanan, Neil Thompson, Robbie Owen, Greg Hill, Tony Hicks, Mark Tyndall, Robert Prest, Glenn McLeod, Andrew Romagnolo.
Other notable clashes include a 159-58 away win for Swans on August 10, 2003. Peter Baker wrote in The Daily Advertiser, "In one of its most impressive performances of the season, Griffith blasted away its old adversary, Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong, to the tune of 101 points. A crippling injury toll has prevented Griffith from playing to its full potential all season, but yesterday's success was evidencing the best is still to come from the Swans, who should gather momentum from here on. There were many signs for Griffith with the forward zone in full flight and spearhead Jason Vant made the most of his opportunities presented. In his best haul of the season Vant kicked seven goals. Also, in fine touch around the goals was ruckman Matt Olney, who notched up five."
Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong: - Troy Lenon, David Cox, Michael Mazzocchi; Jason Hamblin, Adam Symons, John Lawton; Luke Walsh, Brett Lenon, Mitchell Steele; Nathan Irvine, Chris Kelly, Daniel Underwood; Scott Hamblin, Matt Scott, Crag Lenon; David Logan, Shane Lenon (c-c), Mitchell Carroll; Clinton Renner, Chris Pedler, Paul Lucas

AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST HOME MEETINGS WITH COOLAMON ROVERS - 25.05.24
THE "Grasshoppers" from Coolamon make their 82nd visit to Griffith on Saturday with a good record in recent times.
The Coolamon side are unbeaten at Griffith Exies Oval since 2019 and have lost only five times to Griffith in the last 17 years. Time for a change! The Rovers first appeared at Griffith on August 13, 1939, Swans' first season in the South West League.
The local team under captain Fred Savage, won 65-45 at the Griffith Showground. Five goals to nil in the final term sealing victory for Griffith with goal sneak Bill Barry kicking five goals.
The clash of former South Melbourne teammates, Don Keyter and Ian Gillett was heralded to be the greatest ever seen in the South West League when the two sides met on Sunday June 28, 1959, at the Showground. Neil Griggs in his weekly, 'Best of Aussie Rules Briefs' wrote, "Gillett, bigger and stronger might have just taken the edge at the centre bounce but Keyter's greater pace and mobility saw him cover much more territory and 'honours even' would be a decision that should make the most partisan follower of either team happy. Bill Biron played his best game for a long time and was the popular choice of best player afield. Playing in the back pocket he was the key man in a very solid Griffith defence and did a terrific job.
Bill was keen for a run on the ball in the last quarter but was told by the coach Don Keyter. "No dice, you are doing too well back there". And sure, enough it was his grand play that did much to control Coolamon's desperate last quarter rally and one glorious mark he pulled down won for him another 'best mark of the day' award."
The red and whites 101-60 win moved them up one place to fourth on the ladder, replacing Ganmain on percentage.
Griffith: - Charlie O'Brien, Bob Tyndall, Bill Biron; Bob Carroll, Bob Spears, Don Best; Fred Gambell, Bill Tyndall, Mick Newman; Les Collis, Don Keyter (c-c), Len Maples; Tim Clarke, Kevin Rowston, Peter Campbell; Don Bitcon, Doug Koehler, Vic Hathaway; John Forbes.
Coolamon Rovers: - Pat Keogh, Keith Tipping, Tony Keogh; Mick Whybo, Neville Thompson, Brian Browne; Brian Bradley, Kevin Pleming, Ray Pieper; 'Bob' Patterson, Tom O'Brien, Ron Guthrie; Don Bell, Trevor Tipping, Arthur Richardson; Ian Gillett (c-c), John McKelvie, Bob Harris; Chas. Cooper.
Before the opening bounce between the two clubs on May 26, 2013, a minute's silence was held in remembrance of Swans stalwart Mary Collins. The match coincided with a fundraising event for the Griffith Breast Cancer Support Group.
The Swans swapped their iconic red and white colours for pink but were outclassed by visiting Hoppers to the tune of 76 points, 101-25. From there the Kindra Park club would go on and win their first RFL title in 13 years.

AT GRIFFITH SWANS PAST AWAY MEETINGS WITH WAGGA TIGERS - 01.06.24
IN 47 matches between the clubs since 1982, Wagga Tigers hold the upper hand with 28 wins to Griffith Swans nine. The only occasion Swans beat Tigers between 1987 and 2001 at Robertson Oval was on Saturday, July 27, 1991. Griffith went into the match without coach Les "Salty" Parish, serving out a four-week suspension and wingman Joey Agresta but still won 117-72.
Griffith: — Rick Burdett, Ian Geddes, Wayne Bottcher; Brendan Browne, Mick Murphy, Paul Biron; Peter Casey, Peter King, Damien Scott; Andrew Kerr, Darrell Collins, Shane Ruyg; Andrew Romagnolo, Mark O'Connor, Jamie Bennett; Gerard Toscan, Chris Conlan, Leon Stow; Greg Collins, Paul Young.
After Tigers returned home in 2007 from a five-year absence from RFL football, their home ground dominance continued until the Swans pulled off a surprise 95-89 win on April 16, 2011. Going into the game minus Darwin recruit Guy Orton, front-line ruckman Henry Delves and Michael Harris, lost veteran Jeff Mickan to an eye injury in the second quarter, forcing coach Damien Scott to reshuffle his side. But rather than let the disturbance upset their rhythm as it would have in recent seasons, the Swans kept their cool in the second half in the face of a determined Tigers’ fightback. Mick Duncan, Glen Snaidero, Matt Noonan and Beau Runnalls (five priceless first half goals) all starred for Swans, while John Anstee, Angus Durnan, Joshua Gaynor and Damien Papworth all tried hard to get Tigers over the line.
Griffith: — Jonathon Gastin, James Smith, Glen Snaidero; Dean Catanzariti, Matthew Noonan, Che Jenkins; Dean Crack, Michael Johns, Toby Blissett; Cameron Harrison, James Toscan, Tom Buckley; James Fallon, Beau Runnalls, Kris Duncan; Jeff Mickan, Michael Duncan, Mathew Crack; Casey Boye, Michael Tyndall, Jack Tyrell.
Griffith's best away result against Tigers came in 2018, the first year Will Griggs coached the side. Matt Malone, in his report for 'The Daily Advertiser' wrote, "Key forward Jacob Conlan proved how valuable he is to Griffith's premiership charge after starring in the Swans' big win over Wagga Tigers on Saturday. It was the Conlan show as Jacob and his younger brother Lucas proved too much for Tigers to handle on the way to a 15.16 (106) to 7.9 (51) victory at Robertson Oval. The two siblings kicked six goals each as the Swans put Tigers to the sword in the second half."
Wagga Tigers: — Mitchell Wadley, Campbell Lovell, Xavier Lyons; Jake Mascini, Will Morley, Matthew Griffin; Harry Bennett, Shaun Campbell (c-c), Trent Driscoll; Benjamin Kelly, Nathan Cooke, Lewis Gooden; Sam McGowan, Matthew Etchells, Scott Pearce; Louis Beard, Mitchell Castles, Nick Ryan; Matthew Noonan, Riley Green, Ashley Bennett, James McCoullough

Swans coach Brandon Mathews said his side looked the goods when they stuck to their game-plan. "We played how we want to play," Mathews said. "The first quarter was really good for us and them (CGP) were really good in the second quarter. "It's pretty basic how we play footy, it's a lot of team orientated stuff. "We were being a little selfish at times but in the second half everyone got on board."
