Match report - Swans on Screen: Last Saturday afternoon, Griffith Swans met Wagga Tigers at Exies Oval in their final home game for the season. The final scores give a true indication of the character of the game, which was well contested, and the local lads had to work really hard in securing a victory when considering three of their most consistent players Kahlan Spencer, Riley Lucas and Daniel Peruzzi were absence. Although the Wagga side were decisively beaten, we have nothing but admiration for them for the way they battled out the game right to the end.
The game opened well for Griffith who secured a goal within a minute of starting through Heath Northey. Wagga were quick to reply through one of their old members Josh Larwood who got number one goal for them. As the first term progressed five more goals were added by the red and whites through the agency of Henry Delves, Oliver Bartter, James Girdler and Tommy Tyson (2). For the quarter the home team played some beautiful football, fast and clean, their passing with either hand or foot was pretty to watch and the score at quarter time being 6.3 to 1.0.
Not much scoring was done in the second term. Tigers came back and put on two goals (Sam McNaughton and Xavier Heeney) and 1 behind while Griffith could only add 3 behinds. The siren sounded and half-time score being Griffith 6.6 to Wagga 3.1.
Wagga were determined to do or die in the second half and shortly after the start Seb Snelling got number 4 goal, and for a time it looked as though they were going to win. But Griffith rallied and a shout rent the air as Delves marked 50 metres out and by a good kick got the ball just inside the posts. Tigers tried again and got within 15 points at the 20th minute when Snelling kicked his second goal of the term. Once more, Griffith came again and through a clever piece of teamwork which Nathan Richards figured, and the two flags went up and at three quarter time the game stood at Griffith 8.8 to Wagga 5.5.
In the last quarter Bartter and Delves got the first two of four goals early on and the game was all over, as Wagga could only add two goals by Josh Myers and Jake Hinds. Delves kicked his 4th goal and then got a chance for his 5th, but he was out of luck, and another shout rent the air when a behind resulted. Richards added the final Swans goal of the match, and the final scores were Griffith 12.10 (82) to Wagga 7.7 (49). Joel Fairman, one of the two that umpired, and to my own mind, was the best umpire we have yet seen here. He was always on the ball, and did not stop the game by giving a free for every little thing.
