Match report - The Area News: A stellar run in the second half of the season came to a disappointing end for Griffith in the Riverina League elimination final. The Swans were jumped early by Coolamon and the Hoppers always had the answer to every challenge thrown at them as they prevailed by 49 points and set up a clash next weekend against Mangoplah-CUE.
Griffith had to fight hard in the run home just to even secure their spot in the top five and Swans coach Greg Dreyer felt their elimination final performance summed up their struggles all season. "It's been a battle all year because of our general commitment I suppose," Dreyer said. "The good sides rise when it counts, and we didn't so I think we've only got ourselves to blame. "It's fine to make the finals, but you don't want to go out in week one, and if we had gone out in a close battle, then you could probably accept that as well. "But we didn't complete hard enough. We should've learnt from last year's experience in the finals, but obviously, our attitude wasn't right, and we paid the penalty basically.
Adding to the pain for the Swans was the fact that defender Riley Lucas copped a very nasty knock in the final minute of play. Lucas remained on the Narrandera Sportsground surface for some time following the knock, and Dreyer believed he'd copped a pretty series blow. "It looks like his jaw is broken," he said. "It was just a collision, but he's pretty crook." (By Jimmy Meiklejohn - Monday August 26, 2024).
