A summary of match report, with thanks
The Griffith Swans found themselves well-suited to the Narrandera Sportsground yesterday, thrashing the home side 21.12 (138) to 6.7 (43) in the Riverina Football League. Although several Swans played at Narrandera in the RFL-Farrer League representative game earlier this season, it was their first look as a team at the ground where they hope to find success come finals time.
With 13 different players making the goal scoring list, it appears the Swans settled in well to the wide-open spaces at Narrandera.
Chris Blanchard, in only his second game back from injury finished with four goals, while Jamie Bennett booted three. Trevor Clarke, Michael Duncan and Craig Conlan added two goals, while Jon O'Dwyer, Jeff Mickan, Rod Duncan, Matt Kenny, Ben Ford, Chris Conlan, Matt Olney and Brendan Giason each kicked a major. The Swans got away to an early lead with a five goal first quarter, while Narrandera managed just one behind. Another five majors in the second term saw Griffith stretch its lead, the Eagles struggling with accuracy as they kicked two goals six for the quarter. The Swans went into the sheds at half-time with a comfortable 45-point lead and appeared to be toying with their rivals.
They continued their relentless assault on the Eagles in the third quarter, kicking five goals three behinds, while restricting Narrandera to just two majors for the entire quarter. As it has done all season the Swans' defence proved too tight for the Eagles, again allowing Narrandera only two goals in the final quarter. The Swans convincingly ran out the final quarter kicking a further six goals to record an easy 95-point win. (By Rebecca Kroek - The Area News, Monday July 1, 2002).
