RULES COACH IS APPOINTED - by Jack Luhrs

The committee of Griffith Australian Rules Football Club last night appointed Len Sexton as coach for the 1961 season. A special committee meeting of the Club met to decide the coaching appointment from 15 applicants. Len Sexton is 23 years of age; stands six feet and weights 12 half stone. He played Melbourne League football with Geelong in the season 1956-57 before playing in Canberra with the Acton Club. In 1958 he was appointed coach of Berrigan and again held the position in 1959 and 1960 seasons.
GREAT ABILITY
Sexton's outstanding football ability is shown in his football history. In 1958 he was fourth in the voting for League best and fairest whilst with Berrigan. The following year he shared equal first and was clear-cut winner of the same trophy in 1960. A utility player, Sexton can play centre, rover, centre half forward or centre half back. As vice-captain of the Murray League combined side that defeated St. Kilda last season, Sexton won the award as the best man afield. Sexton will marry in January and will occupy a furnished flat in Griffith provided by the club.
An early application by Sexton as coach to the Griffith Club was accepted by the committee. But he had decided in favour of a coaching appointment in Canberra. However, Sexton reapplied when fresh applications were called by Griffith Club.
OTHER APPLICANTS
Former Collingwood star Des Heal
y was among the 15 applicants, along with Footscray ruckman Phil Gehrig, Brunswick and former St. Kilda ruckman Ray Houston. Sexton's fee is the advertised figure of £25 a week during the season, £30 if Griffith make the finals and a substantial bonus if successful in the premiership.
TO COACH SECONDS
Sexton will join former Murray League opponent Jim Eley in the Griffith line-up next season. Eley has been appointed second 18 coach but will play in the senior side. Eley is a former St. Kilda full-back and ruckman, is aged 27, and is 6ft. 1in. tall.  He is married with two children and will occupy the club's house on Gunbar Street. (The Area News - December 2, 1960).
